headshotwebsiteNLP is Neuro Linguistic Programming. It is the technique which features throughout my work as an NLP Master Practitioner.

The core principles of NLP have many uses in effective learning and communication of all kinds, which is how Neuro Linguistic Programming has become the ‘go to’ theory for Business, Leadership, Education, Coaching and Personal Development. However NLP was originally developed as a highly effective form of Psychotherapy. NLP also revolutionises Health issues via the brain’s influence on the mind and on the physiology of the rest of the body – commonly referred to as the Mind/Body Connection.

Created in the 1970’s by Richard Bandler and John Grinder, Neuro Linguistic Programming integrates the best tools from the most highly effective fields of Psychotherapy.

In short, Neuro Linguistic Programming works with the principles of Neuroscience, which explain how Neural Pathways in the brain communicate messages to the mind and the body. At the heart of NLP is the principle that the human brain is brilliant at learning patterns, which in NLP we call ‘programmes’. Now whilst the brain is brilliant at learning, it is also indiscriminate. So some of the ‘programmes’ it has become genius at learning actually cause our problems, keep us stuck and hold us back from our true potential.

Interestingly, a lot of these ‘programmes’ are so well learnt and installed, that they operate outside of our day to day conscious awareness, ie they are unconscious. This explains how so often we get frustrated by our own inner conflict. On the one hand we know consciously that we want to change, but on the other something just seems to get in the way, or make it into a battle of willpower.

Some everyday examples:

  • Wanting to be slimmer and healthier but bingeing on cakes and biscuits
  • Knowing it is unhealthy to smoke, wanting to stop smoking but still giving in to that internal battle for a cigarette
  • Realising it`s important to be confident for that interview or presentation, but going to pieces when the time comes
  • Hating the fact that you are anxious or fearful, knowing it is not productive, but still being ‘locked in’ to the same old patterns

So how does NLP work?

Neuro Linguistic Programming works by de-stabilising those unwanted and frustrating ‘programmes’ in your brain, the ones which are causing problems for you. So anything that the brain has learnt, that is no longer useful, can be ‘un-learnt’. More importantly NLP builds new, positive patterns in the brain, which bring about positive thoughts, feelings and behaviours. It literally works by ‘re-wiring’ your brain, for positive and desired change, and allows you to not only make change, but also to feel good!

This process is called ‘Neural Plasticity’, meaning that instead of our brains being static lumps of matter, which deliver genetically programmed instructions to the mind and the body, our brains are actually able to be molded and shaped. We are in charge of shaping our brains, in turn we can also be in charge of re-designing our thought patterns, feelings, responses and ultimately our behaviours. How liberating! In changing your thinking, you can begin the steps to changing your life.

Language is a very important tool in NLP. Picking up on a client’s use of language will be one aspect of identifying and working through problem areas. The skilled NLP Practitioner will design and use language in a very powerful way that is highly creative and bespoke to you. The language will communicate and influence at both a conscious and an unconscious level, leading you into more positive Neural Pathways, making change easy and natural for you.
